Madekwe, a British-Nigerian mixed race child, was born to a family in South London. The mother of her child is English and her father is Nigerian. She grew on a south London council estate and when she was 14she enrolled in The Brit School. She pursued acting studies in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London.
