Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's been a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency is a website with video and an online blog on the representation of female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her work. But, she also highlights issues related to specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups which have been marginalized. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has spoken at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years she was intrigued by the issue of gender identity and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. This ambitious woman planned to start an internet-based series that examined the role of gender in games and was then the victim of an online campaign to harass her. She was not deterred by the harassment, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. As a result of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and is the founder of Feminist Frequency. This educational non-profit explores the role of women in the pop-culture narratives.
